Ceramic heat shield - HS-44:

This coating repels the heat and keeps the outside of parts such as heads, cylinders and motorcycles pipes cool. The Harley-Davidson head and cylinder on the right were coated with Midnight Black Wrinkle Powder, and the combustion chamber, valves, and exhaust port are coated with our exclusive HS-44 ceramic coating. This coating repels the heat back into the chamber where it is needed to make the power. The same coating can be used on piston tops. This creates a thermal barrier and is designed to keep the heat out of the piston and reflect it back into the chamber.

Because the piston and head are manufactured of aluminum, both act as a heat-sych, absorbing heat from the combustion cycle, causing the piston to expand at a much greater rate than the cylinder and resulting in the loss of piston-to-wall clearance and could even seize the piston.

To prevent this, we have two coatings that we use on pistons: HS-44 and HM-30. Using these coatings allows tightening of the piston-to-wall clearance without fear of sticking the piston. This also keeps the piston straighter in the bore for better ring seal and will help the engine last longer.

These same coatings are used on exhaust pipes as well. The first coat gets cured at 800 degrees F and the second coat at 750 degrees F. The pipe is then burnished with ceramic beads for 30 minutes for a chrome-like finish that will not tarnish from overheating.

For those who prefer black exhaust pipes, we also have a wonderful high temperature black coating called Black Iron, which is added on top of our HS-44 for maximum thermal protection. This coating has a little texture to it, a small amount of shine, is extremely durable and provides the same amount of heat shield as the chrome-like coating.

We have also developed a coating for the inside of chrome pipes to prevent unsightly blue tarnish from building up on the outside. The chrome on the outside is completely protected during cleaning and coating.

We are currently developing a coating that can be mixed with different colors of pigment to produce the same thermal protection but with a much wider selection of colors from which to choose.

With all of these exciting coating options, it makes sense to choose h.m. elliott, inc. for all of your coating needs for your engine or custom bike.
